Agarbana or Agrawan
Agra is a historic city, as
evidenced by its surroundings. The first mention of Agra in history is believed
to be from the time of the Mahabharata , when it was referred to as 'Agarbana'
or ' Agrawan '. It is said that earlier this city was also known as ‘Arya
Griha’. Tawmi [1] was the first known person, who referred to it as 'Agra'. In
1505 AD, on Sunday , July 7 , there was a severe earthquake in Agra, which
destroyed many beautiful buildings of the city already inhabited a year ago.
According to the author of 'Makhjan', the earthquake was so terrible that the
buildings were knocked down to the mountains by his shock, and the view of the
holocaust started to appear. After this, the advancement of Agra started in the
time of Mughal Emperor Akbar . In 1565, he started building a red stone fort
here, which was completed in eight years. Till now it had a small fort made of
bricks in its place, which had turned into ruins . Three thousand mansabdars
who build Akbar's fortQasim Khan was there and the cost of its construction was
35 lakh rupees. The foundation of the fort is deep as far as underground water.
Its stones have been strengthened by adding spices as well as iron rings. Agra
remained the capital during the reign of Jahangir and in the early years of
Shah Jahan 's rule. In this era, beautiful buildings inside the fort - Moti
Masjid and the tomb of Etmaduddaula (built by Nur Jahan ) were built here. Shah
Jahan left Agra and made it his capital in Delhi. At this time, the
world-famous Taj Mahal was built in Agra .
